5 Days FDP on Natural Language Processing (NLP) for Academic Research and Teaching.

Title: 05 Days National Level FDP on Natural Language Processing for Academic Research and Teaching
In Collaboration with: Sree Sankara Vidyapeetom College, Kerala
Date: November 15 – 19, 2025
Time: 06:00 PM – 07:00 PM
Mode: Online via Zoom
Participants: 50

Scrollwell conducted a five-day Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Natural Language Processing (NLP) for Academic Research and Teaching from November 15 to November 19, 2025. The FDP introduced faculty members and researchers to the essential concepts of NLP and its growing role in higher education.

The program focused on practical applications of NLP that improve academic writing, research workflows, text analysis, and teaching efficiency. Each session included demonstrations of AI-based tools that support literature review, summarization, plagiarism checks, translation, feedback systems, and interactive learning activities.

Session Highlights

Understanding NLP and Its Academic Relevance

The FDP opened with an introduction to Natural Language Processing. Participants explored how tools such as Grammarly, ChatGPT, Google Docs, and Turnitin use NLP to improve writing, grammar, and academic integrity. The session helped participants understand the direct connection between NLP and digital literacy.

Basics of Text Data and Preprocessing

The second session explained the structure of text data and basic preprocessing steps. Concepts such as tokenization, stop words, and stemming were presented with simple examples. A short demonstration using free online NLP tools helped participants understand text cleaning without coding.

Applications of NLP in Research

Participants learned how NLP tools simplify literature review, extract keywords, generate summaries, and support plagiarism detection. The session highlighted tools that help researchers organise large volumes of academic text and extract relevant insights efficiently.

NLP in Teaching and Learning

The fourth session focused on classroom applications. Participants examined how AI chatbots, auto-grading tools, translation systems, and voice recognition platforms enrich teaching practices. Practical demonstrations showed how educators can use Google and AI-based tools to build interactive lessons and support diverse learners.

Practical Demonstration and Integration

The final session included hands-on exploration of AI tools powered by NLP such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Napkin AI. Participants worked on drafting AI-assisted lesson content and short research summaries. The session concluded with reflections on how NLP tools can support teaching, assessment, and academic research.

Participation Details

Educators and researchers from various disciplines joined the FDP. Participants engaged actively with the demonstrations and discussions, and several shared classroom use cases and research scenarios that aligned with NLP applications.

Outcomes

By the end of the FDP, participants:

  • Developed a clear understanding of how NLP supports academic writing, research workflows, and digital education.
  • Gained practical exposure to tools used for summarization, plagiarism detection, keyword extraction, and text analysis.
  • Learned how AI-driven tools support teaching tasks such as feedback, grading, translation, and content creation.
  • Understood how to integrate NLP tools into academic and research activities with confidence.
  • Strengthened their ability to apply language-based AI tools in both classroom and research environments.
