National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research (NITTTR)
The National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research (NITTTR) (NITTTR) is a premier autonomous institute under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, dedicated to improving the quality of technical education in the country. Established with the vision of providing advanced training to teachers in technical and vocational education, NITTTR plays a vital role in capacity building, research, and innovation for faculty members across engineering, polytechnics, and other professional institutions.
Background and Establishment
- National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research (NITTTR) were set up in the 1960s and 70s to address the shortage of trained faculty in engineering and polytechnic colleges.
- There are four NITTTRs in India, located in:
- Chandigarh
- Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh)
- Chennai (Tamil Nadu)
- Kolkata (West Bengal)
Each institute serves as a regional resource center for technical teachers’ training while also functioning at the national level.
Objectives of NITTTR
- To design and deliver Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) for technical educators.
- To conduct research and consultancy in technical education and pedagogy.
- To develop and disseminate digital learning resources.
- To provide curriculum design and instructional material development.
- To assist in the implementation of AICTE, UGC, and NEP 2020 initiatives.
- To promote industry-institute collaboration.
Programs and Activities

- Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) – Short-term and long-term online/offline programs for teachers of engineering and polytechnic institutions.
- Postgraduate and Doctoral Programs – Some NITTTRs offer M.Tech, MBA in Educational Management, and PhD programs in collaboration with universities.
- Online Courses & MOOCs – Courses are available on SWAYAM, NPTEL, and other platforms for wider accessibility.
